STIDC Successfully Held Webinar on Sarawak Young Designers Training Programme

A webinar on “Road to Sarawak Young Designers: Designs, Industry, Passion and New Hope” was successfully held on 21 October 2020. It has received encouraging response which attracted 379 registered participants, majority was university students.

The event, being held for the first time is jointly organized by the Sarawak Timber Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) in collaboration with University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain (FSRD) of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia with a theme “Good Art is a Talent, Good Design is a Skill”.

The event was held with the aims to create awareness among university students and to inform the industry and general public on the Sarawak Young Designers (SayD’SignersSarawak) training program, its importance, challenges, opportunities and new hope for the young designers. The SayD’SignersSarawaktraining program, implemented since 2018 plays a key role in facilitating the transformation of the Sarawak timber industry into a high value add industry by 2030.

Many new ideas were shared and the discussion during panel members session has provided new hope and way forward for SayD’SignersSarawak. The participation from renowned professional designers from Malaysia, namely Adj Datuk Ian Davis @ Haji Iskandar Abdullah, Managing Director, ArcRadius Consulting Sdn.Bhd and Mr. Walter Tan, Managing Director, Elemental Republic Sdn.Bhd. and Mrs. Rina Marina Suminar, Chairwoman, Indonesian Society of Interior Designer enlightened the participants on the importance of design industry to development of SMEs and the economy.     

In his welcoming address, STIDC General Manager, Tuan Haji Hashim Haji Bojet said that this event will not be the first and last to be organised by the corporation. Due to the overwhelming response, STIDC will continue to organize similar event in the near future.  

He conveyed his appreciation and thank you to UNIMAS and ITB for their full support and commitment in the successful organization of this jointly virtual seminar. He also thanked speakers, moderators, panel members and participants and viewers who joined the webinar.

A new song about a desire to always be the best for SayD’SignersSarawak was introduced composed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Imam Santosa, former Dean FSRD, ITB and Manager of SayD’SignersSarawak Furniture Training Program at ITB. Six videos on SayD’SignersSarawak activities were also being shared with viewers.
